What is the symbolism behind Jesus' first miracle of turning water into wine?

Jesus' first miracle, turning the water into wine, was significant in many ways. It was an official beginning to his ministry – even though he wasn't sure it was time yet (John 2:4). It was a historical metaphor that compares to Moses turning the Red Sea into blood. In this instance, however, water changing to wine signifies an enriched existence (living water) whereas water changing to blood signified death.

In terms of the actual circumstances, the Wedding at Cana appears to be a family affair, with his mother and brothers in attendance. The host was nearly out of wine, and Jesus' mother feared for the shame this could cause in the community. Instead of shame, Jesus provided a superior wine that informed everyone their host could afford to save the best for last. To Jesus' disciples, this miracle demonstrated his ability to provide in any circumstances.

After the wedding and throughout his ministry, Jesus frequently returned to topic of marriage. Consider that many of his parables contained references to weddings, including:

  • The wise and foolish virgins (Matt 25:1-13)

  • The wedding feast (Luke 14:18-24)

  • The wedding garment (Matt 22:11-14)

In fact, his ministry culminates in a final wedding invitation from Revelation 22:17, "The Spirit and the bride say, 'Come!'" This shows us that throughout Jesus' ministry there was in fact a theme that was foreshadowed in that first miracle.
